Dave Yan is an artist who derived his photographic ability from his passion for vinyl LPs. Having released fully produced CDs and Vinyl LPs, he has always paid keen attention to the images and the design of his record covers and of those that he collects. His creative roots stem from a deep background in hip-hop culture, which has won him global acclaim as a dj and producer through his musical exploits under the moniker Dj Serious. It is through the influence of these record covers and his close association to Toronto graffiti artists such as HSA crew, he discovered his inherent flare for composition. His artistic philosophy transcends both his musical and photographic careers. Elegant, understated and classic are the best way to describe the work of photographer Dave Yan. He picked up his first camera a mere 2 years ago out of necessity to be able to document his dj gigs and he quickly became obsessed in the process of taking photos. Driven by this new passion, he dedicated 2 months of his life travelling through Asia with the sole intent of refining his talent as well as studying the technical aspect of his craft. As a self-taught photographer, he doesn’t adhere to any formal rules and focuses on creating captivating scenes that evoke emotion through his images.
